Program/Squad Descriptions
Below is an outline of programs offered by PJ Aquatic in conjunction with The Hobart Aquatic Club, with squads ranging from Juniors to High Performance. Promotions between the squads are determined by the Head Coaches. Paul and Yogi hold regular progress assessment meetings in relation to swimmers who demonstrate the attitude, ability and application to progress between the groups. These markers are the basis for all internal subjective assessments - and these link closely with the club's premier award, the Chris Wedd AAA trophy.
Junior Squad
Our Juniors program spans across four separate groups, ranging from those moving on from Learn to Swim to swimmers training 5+ sessions per week and racing at State Championships.
Lane 1 and Lane 2 programs focus on extending technical skills and technique while increasing aerobic capacity. Swimmers in these squads typically train for 2-3 hours per week. All swimmers are encouraged to compete at Swimming Tasmania Time Trial competitions.
Lane 3 continues to develop skills already learned, with an increased focus on form-stroke and medley training. Swimmers in this squad typically train for 3-4 hours per week. Swimmers are also encouraged to compete at Regional and State Swimming Tasmania competitions.
Lane 4 is the final stage of our Junior program, with a focus on speed/aerobic capacity and dryland training. Swimmers at the top end of this squad may be invited to train with the Senior/Intermediate groups for certain sessions at the discretion of the Head Coaches. Swimmers in this squad typically train for 5+ hours per week, and are highly encouraged to compete at Regional and State Swimming Tasmania competitions.
SwimFit Squad
The Senior Fitness squad caters for swimmer from a variety of backgrounds.
Whether swimming for fitness, other sports or just for fun, the Senior Fitness program offers an inclusive and stress free environment across several session per week.
Swimmers in this squad typically train from 3-4 hours per week depending on their swimming goals. Swimmers in this squad are always welcome to transition to the competitive swimming pathway should they wish to engage in a higher training load and competition.
Senior Squad
Our Senior Squad is the first step along our competitive swimming pathway.
With a focus on developing aerobic capacity, technique across all four strokes and speed, swimmers will build a solid base that will enable them to be competitive across all distances and strokes.
Six sessions are available in the week for this squad - a mix of morning and afternoon sessions. Swimmers are encouraged to complete five or more sessions per week in this squad to see quality results. Dry land and small group gym classes are introduced to swimmers in this squad at the coaches discretion.
Swimmers in Senior Squad are expected to represent the Club at Swimming Tasmania Time Trials, Regional & State Championships.
Elite Development Squad
The second tier in our competitive pathway, our Elite Development Squad aims to prepare athletes to qualify for and perform at National Competitions.
Elite Development swimmers build upon the base built in Senior Squad, and continue to train for a broad range of events - older athletes in the ED Squad may begin to specialise in certain distances or strokes at the coaches discretion.
Athletes are expected to engage in goal setting activities, with a focus on swimming performance.
Seven sessions in the pool are available each week to swimmers in this squad, with the expectation that a minimum number will be adhered to in line with coach expectations.
Weight training (2 sessions per week) is also a staple of this squad, with training times set by the coach.
Swimmers in the Elite Development Squad are expected to represent the Club at Swimming Tasmania Time Trials, Regional & State Championships.
High Performance Squad
The pinnacle of performance swimming at The Hobart Aquatic Club and in Tasmania, our High Performance Squad prepares athletes to perform at benchmark competitions including Australian Age & Open Championships, Senior Team Trials and International competition.
The HP Squad aims to place swimmers on to Junior and Senior Australian Teams, and seeks to create a performance based environment from which Tasmanian swimmers can achieve their goals.
Athletes are required to participate in goal setting activities with a focus on performance swimming.
Ten sessions are available in the pool to swimmers in the HP Squad, with individual athletes schedules determined by the HP coach.
Weight training and prehab exercise routines are also set by the HP coach in conjunction with outside providers, such as the Tasmanian Institute of Sport.
Swimmers in the Elite Development Squad are expected to represent the Club at Swimming Tasmania Time Trials, Regional & State Championships, in addition to National & International competitions.
